Teori Belajar dalam Aliran Humanisme

Humanisme memandang bahwa belajar adalah usaha untuk memanusiakan manusia. Proses belajar dianggap berhasil jika si pelajar memahami lingkungannya dan dirinya sendiri. Siswa dalam proses belajarnya harus berusaha agar lambat laun ia mampu mencapai aktualisasi diri dengan sebaik-baiknya. Teori belajar pada aliran humanism ini berusaha memahami perilaku belajar dari sudut pandang pelakunya, bukan dari sudut pandang pengamatnya.


Tujuan utama para pendidik adalah membantu siswa untuk mengembangkan dirinya, yaitu membantu masing-masing individu untuk mengenal diri mereka sendiri sebagai manusia yang unik dan membantu dalam mewujudkan potensipotensi yang ada dalam diri mereka. Kaum humanis menerapkan pendidikan dan pembelajaran berdasarkan pada kebutuhan dan minat siswa. Karena kebutuhan dan minat adalah faktor yang mendorong atau memotivasi kita. Dengan demikian pendidikan harus dibuat bersifat sangat personal.

Dengan kata lain, pemikiran humanistik mendesak agar di dalam mengajar guru harus memperhatikan minat dan kebutuhan anak dan lebih jauh lagi dapat menciptakan lingkungan kelas yang sehat secara sosial dan emosional yang ditandai dengan adanya penerimaan dan rasa saling menghargai. Teori belajar yang bercorak humanisme adalah sebagai berikut:

  1. Teori dari Arthur Combs Arthur Combs bersama dengan Donald Snygg mencurahkan banyak perhatian pada dunia pendidikan. Meaning (makna atau arti) adalah konsep dasar yang sering digunakan. Belajar terjadi bila mempunyai arti bagi individu. Guru tidak bisa memaksakan materi yang tidak disukai atau tidak relevan dengan kehidupan mereka. Anak tidak bisa pada mata pelajaran matematika atau IPS bukan karena bodoh tetapi karena mereka enggan dan terpaksa serta merasa sebenarnya tidak ada alasan penting harus mempelajarinya. Perilaku buruk itu sebenarnya tak lain hanyalah dari ketidakmampuan seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu yang tidak akan memberikan kepuasan baginya. Untuk itu guru harus memahami perilaku siswa dengan mencoba memahami dunia persepsi siswa tersebut sehingga apabila ingin merubah perilakunya, guru harus berusaha merubah keyakinan atau pandangan siswa yang ada. Perilaku internal membedakan seseorang dari yang lain. Combs berpendapat bahwa banyak guru membuat kesalahan dengan berasumsi bahwa siswa mau belajar apabila materi pelajarannya disusun dan disajikan sebagaimana mestinya. Padahal makna tidaklah menyatu pada materi pelajaran itu. Sehingga yang penting adalah bagaimana membawa siswa untuk memperoleh arti/makna bagi pribadinya dari materi pelajaran tersebut dan menghubungkannya dengan kehidupannya. Combs memberikan gambaran persepsi diri dan dunia seseorang seperti dua lingkaran (besar dan kecil) yang bertitik pusat pada satu. Lingkaran kecil adalah gambaran dari persepsi diri dan lingkaran besar adalah persepsi dunia. Makin jauh peristiwa-peristiwa itu dari persepsi diri makin berkurang pengaruhnya terhadap perilakunya. Jadi, hal-hal yang mempunyai sedikit hubungan dengan diri, makin mudah hal itu terlupakan
  2. Teori dari Maslow Teori Maslow didasarkan pada asumsi bahwa di dalam diri individu ada dua hal, yaitu suatu usaha yang positif untuk berkembang dan kekuatan untuk melawan atau menolak perkembangan itu. Maslow mengemukakan bahwa individu berperilaku dalam upaya untuk memenuhi kebutuhan yang bersifat hirarkis. Menurut Maslow, setiap individu memiliki kebutuhan-kebutuhan yang tersusun secara hirarki dari tingkat yang paling mendasar sampai pada tingkat yang paling tinggi. Setiap kali kebutuhan pada tingkatan paling bawah terpenuhi maka akan muncul kebutuhan lain yang lebih tinggi. Hirarki kebutuhan Maslow, sebagai berikut: 1) kebutuhan fisik misalnya oksigen untuk bernapas, air untuk diminum, makanan, papan, sandang, buang hajat kecil maupun besar, dan fasilitas-fasilitas yang dapat berguna untuk kelangsungan hidupnya, 2) kebutuhan akan rasa aman dan tenteram (Safety Needs) misalnya mengusahakan keterjaminan finansial melalui asuransi atau dana pensiun, dan sebagainya, 3) kebutuhan untuk dicintai dan disayangi (Belongingness Needs), misalnya menjalin persahabatan, 4) kebutuhan harga diri secara penuh ( Esteem Needs) meliputi kebutuhan akan penghargaan dari orang lain, status, perhatian, reputasi, kebanggaan diri, dan kemashyuran. Tipe atas terdiri atas penghargaan oleh diri sendiri, kebebasan, kecakapan, keterampilan, dan kemampuan khusus (spesialisasi), 5) butuhan Aktualisasi Diri ( Self Actualization Needs). Hierarki kebutuhan manusia menurut Maslow ini mempunyai implikasi yang penting yang harus diperhatikan oleh guru pada waktu melakukan kegiatan pembelajaran. Menurut Maslow, perhatian dan motivasi belajar ini mungkin kurang berkembang kalau kebutuhan dasar siswa belum terpenuhi.
  3. Teori dari Carl Rogers Carl Rogers (dalam Suranto, 2015) membedakan dua tipe belajar, yaitu: Kognitif (kebermaknaan) dan experiential ( pengalaman atau signifikansi). Guru menghubungan pengetahuan akademik ke dalam pengetahuan terpakai seperti mempelajari mesin dengan tujuan untuk memperbaikai mobil. Experiential Learning menunjuk pada pemenuhan kebutuhan dan keinginan siswa. Kualitas belajar experiential learning mencakup: keterlibatan siswa secara personal, berinisiatif, evaluasi oleh siswa sendiri, dan adanya efek yang membekas pada siswa. Menurut Rogers (dalam Suranto, 2015) setiap individu mempunyai keinginan untuk mengaktualisasi diri dan memiliki dorongan untuk menjadi dirinya sendiri. Karena setiap individu terdapat kemampuan untuk mengerti dirinya sendiri, menentukan hidupnya sendiri, dan menangani sendiri masalah yang dihadapinya. Itulah sebabnya dalam proses pembelajaran hendaknya diciptakan kondisi pembelajaranyang memungkinkan siswa secara aktif mengaktualisasi dirinya. Menurut Rogers (2002) yang terpenting dalam proses pembelajaran adalah guru memperhatikan prinsip pendidikan dan pembelajaran, yaitu: 1. Menjadi manusia berarti memiliki kekuatan yang wajar untuk belajar. Siswa tidak harus belajar tentang hal-hal yang tidak ada artinya. 2. Siswa akan mempelajari hal-hal yang bermakna bagi dirinya. Pengorganisasian bahan pelajaran berarti mengorganisasikan bahan dan ide baru sebagai bagian yang bermakna bagi siswa 3. Pengorganisasian bahan pembelajaran berarti mengorganisasikan bahan dan ide baru sebagai bagian yang bermakna bagi siswa. 4. Belajar yang bermakna dalam masyarakat modern berarti belajar tentang proses. Salah satu model pendidikan terbuka mencakup konsep mengajar guru yang fasilitatif yang dikembangkan Rogers. Model ini kemudian diteliti oleh Aspy dan Roebuck pada tahun 1975 mengenai kemampuan para guru untuk menciptakan kondisi yang mendukung yaitu empati, penghargaan dan umpan balik positif. Ciriciri guru yang fasilitatif adalah merespon perasaan siswa, menggunakan ide-ide siswa untuk melaksanakan interaksi yang sudah dirancang, berdialog dan berdiskusi dengan siswa, menghargai siswa, kesesuaian antara perilaku dan perbuatan, menyesuaikan isi kerangka berpikir siswa (penjelasan untuk mementapkan kebutuhan segera dari siswa), tersenyum pada siswa. Dari penelitian itu diketahui guru yang fasilitatif mengurangi angka bolos siswa, meningkatkan nilai konsep diri siswa, meningkatkan upaya untuk meraih prestasi akademik termasuk pelajaran bahasa dan matematika yang kurang disukai, mengurangi tingkat problem yang berkaitan dengan disiplin dan mengurangi perusakan pada peralatan sekolah, serta siswa menjadi lebih spontan dan menggunakan tingkat berpikir yang lebih tinggi.
